In 1965, when Holly Barton leaves her home on the bleak North Yorkshire moors to work as an au pair in Paris, she little realizes that she is soon to become one of France’s most promising fashion designers. Set in the sixties, A Change in Fashion evokes the magic of an exhilarating decade with revolutionary trends in fashion, music, art, social mores and sexual habits; it portrays a period of optimism, when anything seemed possible for those who were young.
Yet Holly has to return to Yorkshire to confront her past before she can move forward to achieve lasting happiness and success. On a soul-searching journey that takes her from the wild beauty of the moors and dales to the glamour of Paris and the French Riviera, Holly gradually discovers herself – and finds the man she loves.
More than a historical romance in the world of haute couture, this is a story about self-knowledge and closure, gender equality and the value of true friendship.
Born in Middlesbrough, Susan Gale spent her childhood on the Northumbrian coast. In 1962 her family returned to North Yorkshire to live in Guisborough at the foot of the moors. Susan read French at Leicester University and worked in France during the sixties, where she met her German husband. For over thirty years she taught English as a Second Language at a state college in Hamburg. During this period she wrote a series of ESL textbooks for adult students, which were published in Germany under her married name, Susan Lau.
A Change in Fashion is her first novel. It reflects her love of the moors and coast of her native Yorkshire, her experiences living abroad and her interest in food, wine and fashion.
Susan has two daughters and lives in the countryside near Hamburg with her husband Walter and Labrador Lily.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading "A Change in Fashion", a beautifully crafted novel of developing self understanding. The colourful language immediately conjures up the rural Yorkshire and fashionable Paris of the 1960s. With its interwoven chapters, I was taken from Holly as a young girl in a dead-end job to Holly as a budding fashion designer and entrepreneur - and finding love on the way - in a tale that drew me in and demanded that I read more. There are a number of twists and turns in the story which, on its way, reminded me of the music scene, the increasing independence of women and the changing styles and ways of life of the 1960s. To anyone growing up at that time, the cultural environment is instantly recognisable and memory jogging; to others it provides a vignette of the era. If you have an interest in the Yorkshire Moors, Paris and Provence, the 1960s and, particularly, the fashion revolution of the time, enjoy a good tale or are interested in reading beautiful, elegant English prose, I recommend this book to you.Product details

A Change in Fashion edition by Susan Gale Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Hi, my wife just read this book and could not put it down... She told me she loved the book, so what a relief ;-)
Set in the 1960s, I first thought this novel might be only for women who actually experienced the first steps to emancipation. But the story about love, friendship and of course fashion is so far from outdated! I really loved it as it gave me such an authentic insight... The perfect read for women of all ages who like a little romance!
